Fritz, Claude and Sonny, about 1934

This was taken about 1934.  Fritz is on the left and Claude is on the right.  Between them is Sonny, whose real name is Albert Luger Jr. He is Estelle's son and my first cousin.  Sonny was an "A" student at St. Thomas Military Academy and a natural leader.  He left college and enlisted in the Army right after Pearl Harbor. He was one of the youngest officers commissioned up to that time.

In 1944 he led his men onto the beaches at Anzio. He was severly wounded by an exploding 88mm flack shell and spent many months in the hospital recovering. He was a brave man. For years he would not talk about it. In later years, he and his wife, Phyllis, returned there and walked the hills and met the people.
