Self Portrait as U-Boat Commander

Self-Portrait as U-Boat Commander. When I became interested in Rembrandt's methods, I wanted to try his chiaroscuro technique which involves heavy impastos in light pigments and then dark transparent glazes (rather like The Return of the Prodigal Son, among others).   So to have a subject suitable for this kind of dramatic shadow, I came up with the idea of a U-Boat skipper, since I had recently read or reread Lothar Günther Bucheim's Das Boot . This self portrait was the result. The pullover is as tactile as a real one from the Aran Isles. Here is a closeup of the head.
