Oil on Linen. Based on a famous US Navy photo. I later saw the original photo, which was in full light with all detail visible. The photo had been darkened by a publisher for dramatic effect. Good too, otherwise it would have simply passed as one more photo among thousands.
The effectiveness of the composition is due to its conforming to the rule of the "golden mean" in which all major elements relate to one another in the proportion of 1: 1.61.
