The Coronation of St. Catherine, after Rubens (detail)

The Coronation of Saint Catherine aftr Peter Paul Rubens( Detail) . This is not St. Catherine herself, but a lady in waiting. The lady in waiting looks remarkably like Rubens' second wife, Helena Fourment. He was painting her for years before he ever actually met her. They wed when he was around fifty and she sixteen.

The original painting hangs in the Toledo Museum of Art, America's art jewel. The original is about fifteen feet tall and eight feet wide. It is certainly the best Peter Paul Rubens painting to have found a home in the US.
